London City Airport, Baggage Handling Facility

The £350m expansion of London City Airport is a complex and far reaching project which includes the extension of the main terminal building.

The relocation of the existing baggage handling facility is a consequence of these works - and the necessary sequencing and phasing of the main terminal works dictated the requirement for an interim solution.

Working closely with LCY’s delivery partner Airport Capacity Solutions and architect Gebler Tooth, WB Shiels were appointed to develop the MEP services design requirements for the temporary facility – a double storey structure with a footprint in excess of 19,500sft and fully enclosed link bridge connecting the new facility to the main terminal building.

The new building will accommodate the interim baggage handling system, and once the main terminal works are completed the system will be relocated back into the main building envelope.
